History: Established on May 24, 1911, by President William Howard Taft under the Antiquities Act, Colorado National Monument was the second national monument established in Colorado. The area was first explored by John Otto, who built trails and lobbied for its protection.
Why It’s Protected: The monument is set aside to protect its “extraordinary examples of weathering and erosion,” showcasing spectacular scenery of sheer sandstone cliffs, towering monoliths, and panoramic canyon views. It also provides vital habitat for over 400 plant species and nearly 250 animal species.

- Hiking: With over 46 miles of trails, there’s something for everyone, from easy strolls to challenging hikes. Popular trails include Echo Canyon, Serpent’s Trail, and Old Gordon Trai.
