Theodore Roosevelt National Park is located in Western North Dakota and is served by five airports in the surrounding area. The closest airport to the national park is the Dickinson ND Airport while the Bismarck Airport provides the convenience of a “more” major airport at a reasonable drive. You can also fly into Rapid City, South Dakota and enjoy three national parks (plus Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills).
It pays to search around for tickets to the different airports if you are looking for a cheap flight to Theodore Roosevelt. If you do not live near one of the airports with a direct flight into Western North Dakota, you will probably need to compare a few different options before you find your flight to Theodore Roosevelt National Park and book your airline tickets.
On your search for a Theodore Roosevelt National Park airport, be sure to consider these five options:
Airports Near Theodore Roosevelt National Park (South Unit) By Mileage:
Dickinson Airport (DIK) – 42 miles
Dickinson Theodore Roosevelt Regional Airport is the closest airport to the South Unit of the national park. It is only 35 miles from Painted Canyon and 42 miles from Medora. Dickinson is also 84 miles (1.5 hours) from the North Unit.
Dickinson Airport is six miles south of Dickinson. It is served by United Airlines offering flights to and from this Western North Dakota airport from Denver, Colorado.
Sidney Airport (SDY) – 100 miles
Sidney-Richland Airport is the closest airport to the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It is only 62 miles and a one hour drive from Sidney, MT to the North Unit. The South Unit is 100 miles and around 1.5 hours away from the Sydney Airport. Sidney is a small airport which is reached by flying on a Cessna 402 with Cape Air from Billings, Montana.
Bismarck Airport (BIS) – 137 miles
Bismarck is located 2 hours and 137 miles east of the park on I-94, making it a convenient option for park visitors buying tickets to fly to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It is the nearest major airport to the park. The airport is served by Allegiant, American, Delta, and United. Direct flights to Bismarck include Minneapolis, Dallas, Denver, and Chicago.
Minot Airport (MOT) – 210 miles
Minot International Airport is located two miles north of the city of Minot and is the newest and largest commercial airport terminal in North Dakota. The airport serves around 300,000 passengers per year. Air service to Minot is provided on flights by Delta, United, and Allegiant.
Minot is located northeast of Medora, a 3.5 hour drive over 210 miles. As you drive between them, you should be aware of the fact that Minot is in the Central Time Zone while Medora is in the Mountain Time Zone. Minot is closer to the North Unit, which is only 2.5 hours and 138 miles away.
Rapid City Airport (RAP) – 246 miles
Rapid City Airport in South Dakota is the farthest of the five closest airports, requiring a 4 hour drive to the entrance of the South Unit. However, Rapid City has the added advantage of proximity to Badlands National Park and Wind Cave National Park. Badlands is a short trip to the west and Wind Cave is a short drive to the south of the airport. This would make it possible to see all three parks in a long three or four day weekend (although I would recommend taking much more time to actually enjoy them!).
Rapid City Regional Airport is located nine miles southwest of Rapid City and more than 700,000 passengers arrived or departed from the airport in 2019. The airport provides direct connections to 8 year-round destinations and five cities seasonally. Most connections to Rapid City fly through Minneapolis or Denver.
